ECUADOR: Rocky start to election campaign

Five of the leading candidates for the presidential elections on 15 October took some part in the first major public debate on 23 August. The debate, held in front of an audience of 3,000, was rancorous, with candidates exchanging insults and shouting at each other. One candidate, Fernando Rosero, stormed out half way through what was scheduled to be a four hour debate. Rosero is the candidate backed by the exiled and highly populist former president, Abdalá Bucaram.
